    EFT & Gottman Method

Two of the most rigorously studied approaches to couples therapy — one rooted in attachment science, the other in decades of observational research.

    01

    Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson in the 1980s, EFT is grounded in attachment theory and views distress in relationships as a result of insecure emotional bonds.

    Core Concepts

    • Negative interaction cycles: Couples get stuck in predictable patterns — typically "pursue–withdraw." EFT helps both partners see the cycle as the enemy, not each other.
    • Primary and secondary emotions: Surface emotions often mask deeper, more vulnerable feelings. EFT guides partners to access and share these primary emotions.
    • Bonding events: Creating corrective emotional experiences — moments where partners reach for each other and receive a responsive, caring answer.

    Evidence Base

Meta-analyses show that 70–75% of couples move from distress to recovery, and approximately 90% show significant improvement. Gains are stable at follow-up.

    02

    The Gottman Method

Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman have spent over 40 years studying what makes relationships succeed or fail, observing thousands of couples in their "Love Lab."

    Key Discoveries

    • The Four Horsemen: Criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling — four destructive patterns that predict divorce with over 90% accuracy.
    • The 5:1 ratio: Stable, happy couples maintain at least five positive interactions for every negative one during conflict.
    • Bids for connection: Partners constantly make small "bids" seeking the other's attention. Consistently "turning toward" these bids builds the emotional bank account.
    • The Sound Relationship House: A framework organising relationship health into layers: love maps, fondness and admiration, turning toward, managing conflict, shared meaning, trust and commitment.

    Evidence Base

Based on longitudinal studies following couples over years and decades. The Gottman Method therapy has been validated in multiple randomised controlled trials.

How This Informs the 12 Love Factors

EFT directly informs our Emotional Safety and Conflict Resolution factors. Gottman's research underpins our Communication Quality, Shared Meaning, and Appreciation & Fondness factors. The Journeys are designed with these evidence-based principles.
