Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson in the 1980s, EFT is grounded in attachment theory and views distress in relationships as a result of insecure emotional bonds.
Core Concepts
- Negative interaction cycles: Couples get stuck in predictable patterns — typically "pursue–withdraw." EFT helps both partners see the cycle as the enemy, not each other.
- Primary and secondary emotions: Surface emotions often mask deeper, more vulnerable feelings. EFT guides partners to access and share these primary emotions.
- Bonding events: Creating corrective emotional experiences — moments where partners reach for each other and receive a responsive, caring answer.
Evidence Base
Meta-analyses show that 70–75% of couples move from distress to recovery, and approximately 90% show significant improvement. Gains are stable at follow-up.
