    Factor 5 · Interaction & Connection

    Repair & De-escalation

    01 — Overview

    What this factor means.

    In plain language

Repair is the ability to interrupt a negative spiral and restore enough safety to reconnect after tension, hurt, or a misstep.

    What it can look like

A softer tone, an apology, acknowledging your part, accepting a restart, using warmth or humor carefully, or taking a constructive break can all function as repair.

    Why it matters

Conflict itself is not the whole problem. Relationships become much more resilient when partners can stop escalation and shorten the distance between rupture and reconnection.

    02 — Practical guidance

How to work with this factor

    01

    When it is working well

When repair works well, mistakes do not have to define the whole interaction. Both partners can recognize a genuine attempt to reconnect and respond to it.

    02

    When it needs attention

Do not wait for the perfect apology. Repair often starts with something small and specific: “That came out harsher than I meant,” or “Can we try that again?”

    03

    When you experience it differently

A gesture that feels like repair to one person may not land that way for the other. Compare what actually helps each of you feel that the conflict is turning a corner.

    04

    What helps

If repair attempts routinely fail, make them explicit. Choose one or two phrases you both recognize as a genuine reset and agree to acknowledge the attempt before continuing the argument.
