Factor 4 · Interaction & Connection
Conflict Problem-Solving
01 — Overview
What this factor means.
In plain language
Conflict problem-solving is the ability to turn disagreement into a shared problem rather than a contest between two opponents.
What it can look like
You clarify what you are actually disagreeing about, stay with one issue, make room for both sets of needs, and move toward a decision, compromise, or next step.
Why it matters
Couples do not need to agree on everything. They need a process that prevents recurring differences from becoming chronic resentment or endless circular arguments.
02 — Practical guidance
How to work with this factor
01
When it is working well
When this is a strength, disagreement can still be uncomfortable without becoming chaotic. You are able to stay curious, define the problem clearly, and look for workable trade-offs.
02
When it needs attention
When conflict becomes circular, stop arguing for solutions and return to the problem definition. Ask: “What are we each trying to protect or achieve here?”
03
When you experience it differently
Two people can leave the same conversation with very different views of whether anything was resolved. End important discussions by stating the decision, next step, or unresolved point out loud.
04
What helps
If you keep revisiting the same issue, reduce its size. Pick one concrete decision, set a short time limit, and test a solution rather than trying to solve the entire relationship at once.
